Julie has been a creative force since childhood, and in the last few years
she has rediscovered painting.

Julie Markfield

Julie Markfield is a painter and graphic designer living and working in the Los Angeles area. She experiences joy through, and is energized by, her spontaneous, intuitive approach to painting.

Her creative process is both instinctive and well-informed, and her style is gestural. Markfield mixes colors on the canvas, and she enjoys surfaces of all sizes and types. Markfield’s preferred medium is acrylic paint, and she is also exploring the integration of house paints, watercolors, acrylic markers, and pencil. Texture and noise add energy to her paintings; she uses molding pastes, acrylic skins, scratching tools, and natural elements like sand and leaves to form vivid collages.

Markfield spent many hours at the Albright Knox Art Gallery while growing up in Buffalo, NY. The large, open gallery spaces were refreshing, and she was inspired by the work of artists like Robert Motherwell, Mark Rothko, and Robert Rauschenberg.

Markfield holds a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and has additional qualifications from the Parsons School of Design in New York City, the New England School of Photography in Boston, and Brunel University in the United Kingdom. She resides in Glendale, CA, with her husband, architect Greg Crawford, and their dogs. She is the proud mother of Olivia Crawford and Vanessa Crawford.
